Cannabidiol (CBD) has grown extremely favorable in recent years because of all its purported health benefits. One of the benefits most central to CBD’s popularity is soothing serious conditions like generalized anxiety disorder.
How CBD does its tricks are not fully understood by science, with studies still being underway. A growing number of studies fully back up some of the health claims of CBD, including being used as a natural remedy to treat anxiety and pain.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is most commonly associated with behavioral and emotional problems in our society. It is a worldwide issue that affects at least 260 million people worldwide.
In a nutshell, anxiety can be described as a condition characterized by excessive worry and unending restlessness. People who struggle with it have a hard time making decisions, speak in public places, stand up for themselves, and tolerate criticism.
Anxiety comes in many shapes and sizes, including panic disorders, agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more. Regardless of the type of restlessness one is undergoing, it is common to use medical marijuana to treat anxiety.
How Does Medical Marijuana Help Anxiety?
It is important to note that much of the research describing CBD’s exact mechanism is based on animal studies. Since mice are not men, certain experts argue if the promising results in mice can be reproducible to human patients. That said, here’s how CBD works.
Traditional medications work by targeting the serotonin system, more specifically, by developing selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Zoloft and Prozak.
These SSRIs increase the availability of serotonin in the synaptic space by blocking reabsorption in the brain. This allows cells to transmit a higher number of serotonin signals, which elevates mood and reduces anxiety.
Medical marijuana for anxiety works in a similar way by boosting a receptor known as 5-HT1A. This ‘subtype’ of serotonin receptors is more efficient than traditional SSRIs, allowing the same benefits to be felt without exerting any problems in the brain.
Human Studies Regarding Cannabis Oil for Anxiety
Brazilian scientists did a study on the relationship between CBD and anxiety, this time on human patients. This was a double-blind study on humans afflicted with generalized social anxiety.
Patients were asked to consume CBD with an oral dose of 400 mg and placebo. Brain scans were performed to carry out suitable tests.
Not only did the patients dosed with CBD report feeling better than the patients that consumed the placebo, but their brain scans showed cerebral blood flow patterns that are in-line with anti-anxiety efforts. Their results conclusively proved the efficiency of CBD for anxiety.
In another study, researchers gave CBD to patients suffering from social anxiety disorder and social phobias. They received either 600 mg dose of CBD or placebo.
The participants using CBD were able to reduce their anxiety, discomfort in speech, and cognitive impairment.
While more research, including double-blinded randomized placebo controlled trials, are needed to closely examine the long term effects of CBD, the overwhelming evidence from animal studies and human studies of patients with anxiety disorders highlights the potential role of cannabis oil for anxiety.
What You Can do to Treat Anxiety
Exercise puts physical stress on the body but ends up relieving mental stress including anxiety and depression. The benefits are only felt strongest if you exercise consistently.
Exercising has been proven to lower stress hormones in the body such as cortisol. It stimulates the release of endorphins that acts as natural painkillers and elevate one’s mood.
Exercise also helps with sleep quality, which can be disrupted negatively due to mental disorders such as anxiety.
Those who exercise regularly feel more confident and competent with their body, which in turn makes them feel better mentally.
2. Reduce Your Caffeine Intake
Caffeine is primarily found in energy drinks and is healthy in moderation. Yet some people are known to excessively consume caffeine, almost to the point of chronic addiction.
Caffeine is known to cause anxiety at high doses. In a bid to cope with anxiety, caffeine addicts end up increasing it. They are trapped in a vicious cycle!
3. Take Healthy Supplements
Try taking supplements that promote anxiety reduction and relieve stress. A few of the more popular ones include Omega 3 fatty acids, green tea, and valerian.
Green tea naturally contains a host of polyphenol antioxidants that lower stress, increase serotonin levels, and provide health benefits. Do remember not to excessively consume them and you’ll be just fine!
A good idea is to combine green tea with cannabis oil for anxiety. This is a holistic approach that reduces anxiety naturally.
4. CBD Chewing Gum
Companies infuse CBD in a variety of consumables, including chewing gums. Studies have shown that chewing gums stimulate brain waves similar to those in relaxed people.
Combine this with CBD for anxiety and depression, and you have a powerful natural remedy. What’s more is that the stronger you chew, the greater your relief, just don’t accidentally bite your tongue in doing so!
Some studies even show that coffee isn’t for everyone. Try reducing your intake of coffee to less than five cups a day and occasionally supplement each cup with hemp based CBD gum for anxiety.
Yoga is a popular method of anxiety relief that enhances mood. If done right, yoga can be just as effective as many anti-anxiety drugs.
The exact mechanism of yoga is still not understood but it has been shown to reduce blood pressure, heart rate, cortisol levels, and increase a neurotransmitter known as GABA.
Don’t forget to combine yoga with CBD oil to treat anxiety for the best results!
6. Dieting for Anxiety
There are certain ‘power-foods’ that you should incorporate into your diet along with CBD oil. The most noticeable of these are Brazil nuts.
High in selenium, Brazil nuts reduce inflammation and help in preventing cell-damage. They have anti-carcinogenic properties that can prevent the development of cancer.
Just make sure not to consume excessive amounts of selenium – no more than 400 mg at a time.
Another good idea is to consume dark chocolate infused with CBD. Studies have found that dark chocolate reduces stress and improves mood.
It is not clear how dark chocolate works, but it is a naturally rich source of polyphenols and flavonoids. It has been suggested it could reduce cell death and neuroinflammation.
Dark chocolate is high in tryptophan, which is used by the body to increase its level of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters such as serotonin.
CBD Oil Dosage for Anxiety
There is no precise dosage of CBD you can take to treat anxiety. The optimal dosage depends on many factors such as CBD tolerance, as some people are naturally more tolerant to CBD than others.
Body type also plays an important role. Make sure to get in touch with your doctor to discuss CBD use to ensure optimal dosage .
Humans have an amazingly high tolerance for CBD and it is very difficult to overdose. No one has overdosed on CBD as of yet.
Some estimates argue that an average 180 lb male would need 33 tbsps of concentrated CBD to overdose.
Frequent users of CBD will find that 10 to 20 mg taken once or twice daily is more than enough to relieve ailments.
Our advice is to start with a small CBD oil dosage and progressively increase dosage until you achieve the desired effects.
